Clinical characteristics of infants and toddlers with developmental delay and approaches to early screening: Based on focus group interviews with child and adolescent psychiatrists and play therapists

Abstract
This study is based on focus group interviews with seven child and adolescent psychiatrists and five play therapists to identify clinical characteristics of babies and toddlers with developmental delay and pursue approaches to early screening. The findings are: (1) for infants under three years, parents had low recognition of developmental delay of their children while for children between three and six years, teachers at day care centers and kindergartens requested examination of children to check developmental delay in many cases; (2) differential diagnosis was difficult for children under three years especially for ASD, social communication disorder, and language developmental delay while diagnosis varied depending on the type of diagnosis organizations for children between three and six years with language developmental delay and delayed language development was reported as the common characteristic of developmental delay; (3) indicators of comorbidity among children with developmental delay included sensory disturbance, language developmental delay, and diet and sleep problems for children under three years and language developmental delay, ADHD, emotional and behavioral problems, attachment problems, social communication problems, learning problems, and
self-care problems for children between three and six years; (4) indicators of risk factors of babies and toddlers with developmental delay included socioeconomic standing (SES), mental health problems of parents, family type, and child care attitude and recognition level of parents; and (5) need for an early screening tool suited to infants and toddlers with developmental delay was raised. Based on the findings, development and application of a Korean-style early screening tool for young children with developmental delay and establishment of a therapeutic system for early intervention were proposed.
